The practical problems related to the History of Music discipline are not new themes in studies on this curricular component. However, the discussion persists due to the complexity of the problems to be solved so that this essential element in the curriculum of Music courses at higher education institutions in the country, provides relevant contributions to the training and pedagogical training of its undergraduate professionals. Thus, seeking to understand and ascertain the perception of students in initial training in the Music Degree Course / UFRN regarding the relevance of the contents of the discipline in their future professional performance; and the contributions of this discipline in the training of teachers, this quantitative research was structured based on the following questions: Do teachers in initial training perceive the contents of the history of music as relevant to their classroom? What are the possible reasons that may hinder the realization of the history of music in the performance of future teachers? What are the impacts of initial training on the understanding for the practical incorporation of music history by these teachers? The data collection sought to identify four thematic axes, named as follows: (i) student characterization, (ii) Importance of the contents of the history of music (iii) Importance of the discipline in the training process (iv) Importance of the discipline in the future professional performance. The proper organization made possible a better analysis of the data and correlated very well with the objectives outlined by this research. In summary, the results suggested that the research participants have a good perception of the relevance of the History of Music discipline, both from a professional perspective, as well as from a teaching / pedagogical perspective of its applicability in the classroom. However, in a not very conclusive way, such a study has revealed possible future paths for the discipline in question.
