Resumen
The speed is pointed out as one of the main causes of traffic accidents, as it increases the chances of collision, and it significantly increases the probability of worsening its consequences. This has motivated to several studies on the reduction of speed limits as a measure of road safety. The present monography seeks to analyze, through an exploratory research, the possible impacts of the reduction of the speed limit on traffic capacity in a stretch of Av. Senador Salgado Filho, situated in Natal/RN. To this end, speed and flow data were analyzed at three points of crossing of the road, obtained by means of a “Flow Report per hour / direction”, issued by the Secretaria Municipal de Mobilidade Urbana (STTU), with measurements taken from 00:00 to 23:59 on April 11, 2019, producing tables and graphs that illustrate the current situation; the results suggest that, for low flow situations, when there is greater freedom of choice of speed, about 85% of drivers travel at speeds of up to 50 km / h, while at peak times, this value reduces for 40 km / h , reaching up to 30 km / h
