This Course Completion Work (CCW) aims at understanding the limits and possibilities of the professional intervention of social workers in the face of the professional demands that are placed in the care of people living with HIV/AIDS, considering the Giselda Trigueiro Hospital (GTH) in the city of Natal, capital of Rio Grande do Norte (RN). In its development, it is discussed, since the emergence of the first cases of people with HIV in Brazil, how care was given to this population in the first historic moments and currently, just as the distinction between having the virus of the HIV and the AIDS syndrome, which is not always understood by society. It is argued about the professional class of Social Work in general and specifically in the health field, and it is discussed how it fits into this space and articulates with the target audience highlighted, in addition to its work in reality, permeated by data collection. It is important to remark that we have passed through the Covid-19 pandemic and this was also considered, including the changes it caused. From this perspective, the methodology of this research covered the literature review and document analysis, as well as the field visit and application of semi-structured interviews with two Giselda Trigueiro's social workers. The approach is mainly qualitative. It is concluded that participation of social workers in social care for people living with HIV/AIDS is essential because their demands are complex and go beyond the health-disease issue, comprehending the professional's object of atuation, and there is urgency to debate this theme due to the enormous expressions of prejudice experienced by this population and the misconceptions and stigmatization present in society, which directly impact the health care of people living with HIV/AIDS in Brazil.
