Proposta de Plano de Gerenciamento de Resíduos Sólidos para o Departamento de Odontologia da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte

Abstract

When Health Care Waste (SSR) is improperly managed, it can cause environmental and social impacts that range from soil and water pollution to contamination and hospital infections. The emergence of new legislation - which has required stricter rules and practices in the management of solid waste - and a Solid Waste Management Plan tend to contribute to this context. Understanding the importance of the Dentistry Departament of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (DOD / UFRN), this paper aims to prepare a proposal for a Solid Waste Management Plan, which can also serve as a model to the aforementioned department and the other departments of the same University. In order to reach our goal, a diagnosis was made in loco, through monitoring the activities that generate residues up from the application of questionnaires – interviews with the employees of the department were also made. As a consequence, some inadequacies regarding management waste were identified. In order to correct them, proposals for treating and managing solid waste were elaborated according to the legal documents with the objective of creating special programs, and of training and paying a higher attention to health conditions within the community. A proposal involving all employees, the estimate cost, and a plan to insert a regular schedule was also developed. What we expect within this estudy is that the department will benefit from the qualification of its staff, and the production of less risks to the environment, thus guaranteeing a healthier environment to its customers.
