Presented in this document is a study concerning the role of the school librarian, namely his/her attributions and contributions to educational activity. Its key methodology entails the inductive method, pertaining to bibliographical, documental, and interview-based research techniques. This study shows a shifting conceptual approach to the school library over time, its implementation, and the attempt to expand through Federal Law 12.244/2010. It analyzes the function of the librarian in the School Library, as well as describes the function of the librarian in accordance with the Federal Library Board. It reviews the effectiveness of the work performed by the librarian through interviews with three librarians employed at private school libraries in the municipality of Natal, due to there being no school librarians in the public school system. These interviews are transcribed, accompanied by answers regarding the work of these professionals, their aspirations and their expectations within the institutions in which they work. It reports on the contributions of librarians to educational action. It verifies the importance of the librarian in the school library. And further, it concludes by suggesting the possibility of including disciplines related to methodological and didactical content within the Librarianship Course curriculum. Keywords: School library.
