The textile industry has developed, more and more, procedures and techniques with the aim to produce brand new materials with multifunctional characteristics. An important field, with high developing potential, is the application of textile materials in the health area. The presente work intends to characterize extracts of Ximenia americana L., which is one of the numerous plants used in traditional medicine on the treatment of inflammations, wounds and ulcers. The extracts will be applied in the superficial modification of functional knitted fabrics with the objective of develop a textile material that might be capable of treat wounds and ulcers by pressure. There were characterized aqueous, ethanolic and acid extracts using the following techniques: pH, conductivity, spectrophotometry of absorption and ICP-OES to the determination of mineral nutrients, which is an innovative element of this study. These extracts presented higher absorption between 220 and 280 nm, indicating the presence of phenolic compounds. The more abundant metals were Ca, Na, K and Mg.
