Psychoanalysis is widely spread in Brazilian post-graduation. However, the number of researches on the criticisms upon psychoanalysis is remarkably small, and literature review indicates that there is still not a clear acknowledgment of the criticism towards psychoanalysis as a field of research. With the exception of one author (Beividas), nor is there a reliable portrait of the amplitude and diversity of the criticism towards psychoanalysis. Following Dufresnes’ line, we propose the denomination of Critical Freud Studies (CFE) for the group of works that study psychoanalysis and fit into this critical perspective. We attempt to draw attention to the issue by performing a basic description of the work of five main authors in the field: Ellenberger, Sulloway, Roazen, Grünbaum and Macmillan. In conclusion, we argue that the inclusion of CFE is fundamental within the context of teaching and research in psychoanalysis, because without the presence of criticism psychoanalysis risks being alienated.
