This thesis studied the mortality from external causes in the Brazilian elderly population aiming to identify the behavior around the deaths from external causes in the country from 1995 to 2010. Initially a database was set up through the Brazilian Mortality Information System (SIM) with all the numbers of deaths from external causes in the population older than 60 years old. From this data an ecological study was formed, then an integrative review of the recent literature available, in the end a polynomial model was applied, since it presents a more adjustable model to the line of the time series derived from the data. After the analysis, it was possible to find out that the number of deaths from external causes in elderly is growing with abrupt variations from high to low numbers and, at some points, stability. The results point to issues in the quality of the information available, lack of correlation with the social conditions and poor public policies toward the elderly. The integrative review brought up that many studies indicate frailties in the public policies and suggest the need of protective measures to the elderly while present the fact of a growing wave of violence in each region and in the country as a whole. It is important to consider that some regions, as North for example, do not have a numerous quantity of studies as the Southeast region, ergo, the need of further discussions about the subject in order to clarify the understanding of the reasons of the growing number of the violent deaths in the elderly population. Concluding, dying, even if you are an elderly, is still a reason of fear.
