Resumen
Green technologies, such as photovoltaic technologies, have in recent years gained increased
attention from society for providing renewable electrical energy, as well as contributing to the
reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the environment. This thesis aims to propose a
model for the technology development process of the organic photovoltaic cell industry. The
research is characterized, regarding the nature, as being applied; regarding the approach, it is
qualitative; regarding the objectives, it is exploratory and descriptive; concerning the
methodological procedure, it is considered a bibliographical research and case study. The
research began with a theoretical survey by means of a systematic bibliographic review on the
themes of technology development and organic photovoltaic cell. In the second step, a case
study of the technology development process used by a Brazilian company in the organic
photovoltaic cell industry was conducted. The third step was to structure a model to manage
the technology development process of the organic photovoltaic industry. In the case study it
was identified that the company, object of the study, does not follow a formal process for the
development of cell technology. However, it performs several activities common to
technology development models referenced in the literature. The proposed model, called the
Reference Model for the Organic Photovoltaic Industry, comprises three macro-steps, ten
stages and six decision points. The results of this thesis have significant managerial
implications as they may help companies organize innovation efforts and reduce development
time, thus providing competitive advantage for them. Furthermore, the results provide
theoretical implications for research in the areas of technology development, solar PV, and
organic PV cell, as the proposed model considers the integration of the activities that are part
of technology development models with the technology readiness level.
