Objective: To identify, synthesize and classify the main barriers and facilitators reported by the Brazilian population using theoretical bases of human behavior in relation to health. Methods: This is a qualitative cross-sectional study, with a sample of different sociodemographic profiles and age, the collections took place in the form of a structured face-to-face interview with three open questions about the difficulties and facilities experienced by the population. A framework created based on the Health Belief Model and the Theory of Planned Behavior was used for data analysis. Results: In total, 59 interviews were analyzed. Among the main barriers identified, there is the difficulty in relation to the use of masks and the effective organization of prevention measures. The main findings among the facilitators are the ease of purchasing PPE's and the adoption of new habits. Conclusion: The main barriers and facilitators reported by the Brazilian population in coping with severe acute respiratory syndromes are highlighted, thus showing the need to adopt new strategies for population engagement, at a collective and individual level, these strategies can be carried out with media support and pre-existing structures at the primary level of health care, these future strategies aim to make it easier to control and prevent respiratory diseases.
