Buritizeiro (Mauritia flexuosa) is a typical palm tree from the Amazon, widely distributed throughout Brazil, belonging to the family of its compounds and the genus Mauritia, in which the fruits are known as Buriti and are classified as rich in antioxidant compounds. Therefore, in view of the bioactivity of the components presented in Buriti, this research aimed to evaluate the antioxidant potential of Buriti oil. For this, assays of diphenyl carotenoids of buriti oil by saponification, quantification of -carotene by high precision chromatography, and 2,2-1-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) were performed. The oil was supplied by the company Plantus S/A. A carotenoid extract was performed with two types of solvents (hexane and petroleum ether) being tested in five saponification times (1 h, 2 h, 8 h, 12 h) and two drying temperatures of the saponified extracts (35 and 30 ºC). The quantification of β-carotene was performed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) using 2 g of the oil, and the best extractive result was a value of 2.36 (0.13)bA when using hexane as a solvent for 8 hours. The 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) antioxidant assay resulted in an IC50 of 1.16 (0.00) mg.ml-1, which can be attributed to the presence of provitamin A ( carotenoids), Vitamins E (tocopherols) and C in the oil. The results found in this study show the rich composition of buriti oil, as well as its high and promising antioxidant.
