Resumen
One of the main problems faced by cities around the world is related to public security. In Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, the situation is not different: the city has recently stood out worldwide by the high rates of violence. Aiming at creating solutions to solve this major problem, the ROTA platform has been developed through a partnership between the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) and the Secretariat of Public Security and Social Defense of Rio Grande do Norte (SESED-RN). ROTA constitutes the technological baseline to support Web systems and mobile applications mainly aiming to contribute to improve services offered by SESED in terms of data analysis, sharing, and visualization among public security managers and agents, the Integrated Center of Public Security Operations (CIOSP), and population. This work presents the development of two applications atop the ROTA platform, namely ROTA Viatura and Cidadão Seguro. ROTA Viatura is a mobile application use by militar police officers patrolling the city, making information search and exchange with CIOSP easier and faster to handle occurrences. In turn, Cidadão Seguro is an alternative to the traditional telephone channels to register occurrences and denouncements, thus enriching the level of details of information sent to those channels and avoiding waiting on the telephone line. As main contribution, the developed applications have a great potential to promote a paradigm shift in the operations related to public security, which now have efficient technological tools to better support services offered to population.
