dc.description.abstractThe requirement to establish a method of treatment and disposal of municipal sanitary sewage is a real and indispensable need in the cities. For some municipalities in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, the following realities can be found for a treatment system: non-existent or existing, although inappropriate or even collapsed, mainly due to lack of maintenance. Considering these realities, this study aimed to propose improvements in the wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) from Touros/RN, in order to recover the area currently used for the construction of the facultative and maturation ponds, which are operating improperly. By using the UASB reactor and the polishing ponds operating under the hydrodynamic regime of sequential batches, it was possible to verify probable improvements resulting from the application of the proposed system. Besides the possibility of reusing the area already destined for treatment, the model presented would generate: better quality effluent; the possibility of meeting the 20-year project horizon and the reduction in construction costs. The results present details about the proposed treatment system, sized to operate with an average efficiency of BOD5,20 removal of 74% in UASB and effective pathogens removal, since the effluent produced would present an average value of TTC of 3,09*10-² CFU/100 mL and can be released into the Maceió River without bringing negative environmental consequences.
