Resumen
This thesis aims to investigate the working conditions of social workers, linked to the
precariousness of work and social politics in Brazil, aiming to identify the expressions of
precariousness in professional practice in student assistance at the Federal Institute of Alagoas
(IFAL). The research has a qualitative character, based on a Marxian perspective, based on
historical-dialectical materialism, whose starting point is reality in its chaotic manifestations.
To achieve the research objectives, and respecting the particularity of the object, the
methodological procedures adopted in the investigation were bibliographic research,
documentary research and field research, where a reflection and analysis on the professional
practice of social workers was built and working conditions at the Federal Institute of Alagoas
(IFAL) in the face of the current transformations of contemporary capitalism. The study
revealed that, in the current stage of capitalism, the increase in forms of exploitation of the
workforce has led to the expansion of precarious work, which occurs both in the productive
sector and in the unproductive sector, as in the case of services, although there are
particularities in each one. Thus, the social worker also experiences the harmful effects of
precarious working conditions in his professional practice, either through the wage
relationship, which inserts him in the process of commodification of the work force, or by the
condition of the social politics to which their professional practice is linked. In the wake of
this understanding, the research results allow to identify that the elements that involve the
particularity of the precarious working conditions of IFAL social workers are similar to those
of other workers. In addition to the ontological aspect of the precariousness of the work of the
social worker, which is his wages, there are other elements that affect this precariousness,
such as: the conditions given by the social politics to which he is inserted (education politics,
in particular the student assistance), their workload, the physical and material resources
available at the institution, ways of intensifying their work, the demand for versatility,
excessive demands, bureaucratization of work, subjective work issues, which include intense
control, overcharging for goals and high productivity at work, and professional illness as a
result of work. Therefore, social workers as subjects belonging to the working class are not
immune to the most diverse forms of precarious working conditions.
