Background: There is scientific evidence for the reduction of respiratory muscle strength in patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). However, there are few studies correlate that reduction with values of peripheral muscle strength. Objective: To correlate the values of peripheral muscle strength through peak torque for extension (TEP) and peak torque for flexion (TFP) with the values of respiratory muscle strength by means of the Maximal Inspiratory Pressure (MIP) and Maximal Expiratory Pressure (MEP). Methods: This observational, analytical and cross-sectional design. The sample is composed of 10 patients with COPD, both sexes and aged between 40 and 80 years. The analyzes were performed using software “Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS – version 20.0)”. The descriptive analysis data was done by mean and standard-deviation. The distribution was verified using the “Shapiro-Wilk” normality test and the correlation of the variables by the Pearson correlation coefficient (r). In addition, a significance level of 5% was assigned. Results: It was observed positive correlation of strong magnitude and significant between TEP and MIP, TEP e MEP e TFP e MEP, in addition there was a positive correlation of moderate magnitude between TFP and MIP. Conclusion: The data suggest that the values found in isokinetic dynamometer correlate with variables MIP and MEP in manovacometer, demonstrating the gain or loss of muscle strength in both peripheral and respiratory components.
