Objective: To analyze the effect of competitive internal load (IL) on the activity of the Hypothalamic Adrenal Hypophysis (HAH) axis in young athletes during official matches. Methodology: A total of 20 soccer athletes (16.8 ± 0.5, 172.9 ± 7.7cm, 65.0 ± 7.9kg, 8.3 ± 1.8% body fat, 53.1 ± 2.0ml.kg.min-1) of the under 17 category performed two successive matches (M1 and M2), with a 24-hour interval between them. In order to determine the competitive internal load, the method subjective effort exertion (session-RPE) was used, the salivary cortisol was used to determine the activity of the HHA axis and the time in the field (TIF) was used for the determination of the internal load and to measure the time that the athletes spent in game condition. Paired t test compared salivary cortisol values (pre and post) in both matches; Also compared the IL, the TIF, the salivary cortisol variation delta between the matches. In a second, divided the group of players according to the median of the internal load (high internal load) [HIL], n = 7; Low internal load [LIL], n = 7). Mixed ANOVA of repeated measures, compared the groups in time and the interaction of the groups in the times for the variable salivary cortisol. An independent t-test was used to compare the variables internal load, session-RPE, TIF and the salivary cortisol variation delta between the different groups. Results: Salivary cortisol concentrations were increased after both sets M1: p <0.001 and M2: p <0.001). No differences were found between internal loading (p = 0.55), session PSE (p = 0.32) and TIF (p = 0.37) between matches. The cortisol value according to the division of the groups was observed that the exposure of the groups (HIL and LIL) to different competitive internal loads has similar responses of salivary cortisol (p > 0.05), although the groups had an effect of time. In addition, in the other variables according to the division of the groups, the IL, TIF and session-RPE values were higher in the HIL group. Conclusion: In conclusion, competitive matches performed in a short period resulted in an acute increase in salivary cortisol values in both matches; however, this increase does not appear to be dependent on exposure to different magnitudes of competitive internal load in young athletes.
