This paper aims to present the expansion of the Rudimentary schools in the state of Rio Grande do Norte between 1924 and 1930, justified by the several changes that occurred in the organization of education in the state, such as the creation of the Department of Education in 1924 - the body responsible for the organization of public education in the state - and the approval of the Internal Regulations of state schools. The work was developed considering the following questions: In what way were the Rudimentary Schools organized in Rio Grande do Norte? How was the expansion of the Rudimentary Schools in the state of Rio Grande do Norte between the years 1924 and 1930? To do so, it was made use of the understanding of unitary school for Carvalho (2015) and the documentary analysis through the mapping of decrees, legislations and governors' messages within the mentioned historical cut, attending to a qualitative approach for data analysis. The conclusion is that the concern with the dissemination of public education instituted an expansion of the Rudimentary Schools, through which primary education was attended in places where there were no school groups. The Rudimentary School was the type of school that expanded the most between the years 1924 and 1930 in Rio Grande do Norte. And more, it was next to the Grupos Escolares, the type of school with the highest rates of enrollment in the period under study.
