Resumen
OBJECTIVE: To verify the difference between screen time and physical activity level of adolescents of both sexes from public schools.
METHODS: The sample consisted of 118 high school students (public schools), aged 12-19 years, in Natal, RN. The level of physical activity was measured by the PAQ-A questionnaire, which indicates a scale of “physically active” from 1 to 5, and the screen time through anamnesis filled out by self-report, being analyzed the time spent on social networks, TV and video game.
RESULTS: There was a prevalence of boys in this study. Young males were more physically active than females, indicating an average of 2.32 (0.68) vs. 2.04 (0.67). The adolescents in the study had much longer screen time compared to the age-appropriate screen, where girls demonstrated to use social networks for a longer time, while boys, video games, computers and television. In addition, 52% of the students reported assiduous participation in Physical Education, with boys with greater participation than girls.
CONCLUSION: the use of technological tools in the daily life of adolescents is exaggerated, in which it deviates from the recommended parameters and thus generates a very low level of physical activity. In addition, the difference between the sexes must be rethought by adolescents, school professionals and especially the Physical Education teacher.
