Resumen
Prescription and inappropriate use of medication generate expenses that further aggravate
the problem of the lack of resources of most health services, as well as the harm they can
cause to patients. In practice, some of the most common irrational uses of medications
are excessive prescriptions of antibiotics, proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), and
glucocorticoids. This study aimed to analyze the profile of PPI prescriptions in a
university hospital and to evaluate the financial impact of the rational use of this class of
medications. This is a cross-sectional, retrospective and descriptive study of the electronic
medical records of hospitalized patients who used PPI over a period of 3 months. Having
a total mean age of 54.4 years (SD = 17.5). It was observed that 49% of the PPI
prescriptions did not have any use criteria, and the cost for this group was R$ 15,164.29
during the analyzed period. This study points to the need to implement internal
therapeutic protocols for the use of PPIs, aiming at an appropriate, safe and cost-effective
prescription, aiming at a rational use of these drugs.
