Resumen
Financial systems around the world are witnessing the emergence of new types of banking, non-banking and financial services institutions structured around the intensive use of computer technology. Among these new models are fintechs and big techs. In this work, we sought to answer how these institutions are being conceptualized, regulated and how they behave in the alternative credit market. For this purpose, we look into published works on the subject and a set of data provided by Cornelli et al. (2020). Among the main descriptive statistics analyzed, the highlight is the high concentration of relative credit that China has in relation to global credit for both types of institutions. Brazil, despite not having large volumes of alternative credit compared to the world total, plays a major role in South America, both in terms of volume of credit and regulation. The work presents important considerations for the discussion and encourages new research possibilities related to fintechs and big techs.
