Resumen
Studies in the coastal zone of the Municipality of Cascais (Portugal) revealed significant differences in geomorphological patterns of the beaches which, consequently, will respond differently to future estimations of climate changes, especially regarding mean sea level rising. These characteristics pointed out the need for development and implementation of methods for monitoring and modeling of multitemporal morphological changes, essential in projects of mitigation of environmental impacts. This work aims to contribute to geomorphological studies on Guincho Beach based on high accuracy digital elevation modeling. In this method, the sampling points defi ning coastline and beach surface were determined with centimetric precision in relation to the planialtimetric geodetic referential adopted offi cially in Portuguese territory, which are unambiguous, fixed and relatively stable in time, by positioning and altimetry of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). The results allowed: MDE with decimetric accuracy, morphological modeling and pattern distribution of beach relief, profi le extraction, classifi cation of beach morphodynamic stage, and obtaining important quantitative information, such as area and perimeter of beach face, volume of sediments above the mean sea level and frequencies of orthometric height. Method-specifi c qualities were highlighted to proper monitoring of beaches changes in short-term and detailed scales, with applications in studies related to stock, transport and sediment supply, relevant indicators to studies on future impacts of climate change on the beaches of the Municipality of Cascais
