Resumen
This study analyzed the influence of environmental variables [sea surface temperature (ºC), wind speed (MPs), cloud cover (0-8) and rainfall (mm)] in catch per unit effort (LPUE) of Penaeidae shrimps the coastline of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. Landings monthly data of 20 communities were analyzed over 10 years. This time series allows us to trace the trend, cycle and seasonality of catches of Penaeidae shrimp in this state. Environmental variables for this period were obtained through the website of the National Institute of Meteorology. Through trend it was confirmed two more production peaks: between 2004 and 2006 and between 2008 and 2010. It was also observed the existence of annual seasonality, with peaks marked in two seasons (fall and spring). Through Generalized Additive Models (GAM's), showed that LPUE of marine shrimp for the Rio Grande do Norte state is especially affected by precipitation, sea surface temperature, as well as suffering a temporal and spatial effect. Studies on native marine shrimp in the Rio Grande do Norte coast are still scarce in relation to other regions of the country. Biological and ecological information are important for the management of these shrimps, since fishing communities depend on fishing as their main source of income. Thus, the understanding of the influence of environmental variables in the marine shrimp LPUE is of fundamental importance for the management and conservation of fish stocks.
