Resumen
The present work has as study object the State School Cônego Monte, located in Natal, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. It is characterized by being a school with foundations in Catholicism, created by the Diocese of the Natal, in the 1940s, as an educational and welfare stamp institution. The school is part today of the state education system, maintaining, however, a number of practices and representations of the Catholic Church, highlighting the presence of religious symbols integrating its architectural structure. In everyday school life, educational and socio-cultural practices show the marks of the religiosity. Considering the educational and socio-cultural practices of everyday life of this educational institution, the central research question stood at investigating how, in the XXI century, in a secular country, a public school institution holds in their daily practices, characteristics of a confessional school? Faced this reality, this research analyzed the educational and socio-cultural practices of the State School Cônego Monte, to understand the influence of the Catholic Church and its permanence in daily practices. It was used as a data collection instruments, data and document sources of information such as laws, decrees, minutes and records books, reports, political pedagogical project, school regulations, professional journals, iconography (pictures and symbols) and publications of local newspapers as well as interviews with people of the school community: principals, teachers, parents and students. It is based on the principles and methods of the new cultural history as an analytical category in the history of educational institutions, school culture and everyday practices, based on the authors Peter Burke (2008), Justino Magalhães (1999, 2004), Dominique Julia (2001), Viñao Frago (1995), Viñao Frago e Escolano (2001) and Michel de Certeau (2012). The survey results point to the Church endures in the school routine, even after its change to the State control, as a result of the political relationship between the church and the state and the school culture, built over its existence, under the base of educational practices of the Catholic Church.
