This paper aims to analyze the challenges of Russia in its resurgence as a world power after the ascension of Putin government. The central argument is that this resurgence highlighted the historical United States policy of containment of Russia. We suggest, however, that the policy of containment has reverse effects because deepens nationalism, accelerate the strengthening of state capacities and stimulates an autonomous diplomacy of Russia. Therefore, rather than contain, accelerates the return of Russia as a great chess player in the international arena.O presente trabalho tem por objetivo analisar os desafios da Rússia em seu ressurgimento como potência mundial após a ascensão de Putin ao governo. O argumento central é que esse ressurgimento evidenciou a histórica política dos EUA de contenção da Rússia. Sugerimos, contudo, que a política de contenção tem efeitos reversos, pois aprofunda o nacionalismo, acelera o fortalecimento das capacidades estatais e estimula uma diplomacia autônoma da Rússia. Portanto, ao invés de conter, acelera o retorno da Rússia como grande enxadrista da arena internacional.
