The objective of this paper is to empirically study the process of deindustrialization and reprimarization of the Brazilian economy from 1996 to 2013. The methodology consisted in a descriptive analysis of the data and in the use of the Grubel and Lloyd index (1975) to verify if the insertion of Brazil in the international market takes place through the productive specialization or through the diversification of the production. The main conclusion suggests a reprimarization of the export agenda, since primary products have a larger share of foreign sales and high value-added goods in imports. Regarding the process of deindustrialization, the Brazilian economy has reduced the share of the value added of sophisticated products in the Gross Domestic Product and expanded to that of basic products.
