According to the World Health Organization WHO, low back pain is characterized by a compromise that causes abnormality of the segments of the lumbar spine, physiological, psychological or anatomical etiology or a disability that limits or impedes the normal performance of physical activities or daily basis. Objectives: To perform a review of the literature on the efficacy of segmental stabilization exercise programs in individuals presenting with low back pain. METHODS: A search of the databases MEDLINE, SCIELO and PEDRO was carried out from November 2016 to April 2017. A total of 1254 articles were pre-selected 38 according to the inclusion criteria established in the study and 14 included in the survey. Results: After a previous analysis of the results, it can be observed that stabilization programs are shown to be positive in improving the pain of patients with low back pain as well as improving the functionality. The literature also suggests that this technique also presents positive results when compared to other interventions, such as back school, stretching and muscle strengthening. Conclusion: Through the evidence found in this study and confronted by the literature, it was possible to suggest that segmental stabilization exercises are positive in patients with low back pain, and are effective in reducing pain and improving function. The literature also suggests that the more positive effects of these exercises can be observed when associating with other interventions, but it has not been possible to conclude that they are superior to any other type of intervention.
