The analysis of the mechanisms of status transmission has corresponded to a significant part of the efforts of research about stratification systems. The organizational differences between industries and regional segments are precisely related to structural dimensions of stratification studies. In this sense, the aim of this Dissertation is to investigate in which degree ones current occupational status may be affected by social origin considering the periods of labor market entry as well as each segment (regional and industries markets). The data for the hypothesis tests come from the Brazilian National Household Sample Surveys (PNADs) of 1973, 1982, 1988 e 1996. It was found that labor market segmentation into industries and the level of economic development into different cohorts of labor market entry are mechanisms of status transmission, while regional segmentation did not show significant effects. This may be related to increased occupational opportunities due the transformation of the labor market´s structure, and importance of skills acquired by the individual, such as education, in the attainment occupational process.
