Due to the public and essential aspect of their services, power distribution utilities experience, in Brazil, important challenges about their business: if the search for operational efficiency is a natural concern of the business world, government regulation on the sector also pushes it to achieve quality goals, while controls all the mechanisms for updating inherent prices, establishing rules that limit the expected profit margins as well. Within this context, the business processes related to planning and management of distribution grids comprise a very important activity to meet those goals, influencing indicators such as: technical and non-technical losses, maintenance costs and system reliability. This paper aims to describe the study of mathematical and computational techniques highlighting: statistical classification, wavelets and evolutionary optimization combining them into a methodology that results in a software tool to aid decision-making on distribution networks, providing, for the user, diagnostics about the grids current situation, along with optimized reconfiguration simulations to improve the systems efficiency. After describing the scientific resources used, as well as the proposed methodology, a case study with a practical example of the proposed tool is presented along with the obtained conclusions and final considerations
