Using june of 2013 as a reference, the present article intends to explore the possibilities of the school as a public institution of urban planning through the mobilization of citizens and the production of a social and spatial cartography of the local potentialities. In order to discuss such approach, we will use three exercises produced in the two contexts: one related to a research project coordinated by me named "Democratic Platforms: Schools as urban planning agents" financed by FAPEMIG in Minas Gerais, Brasil; and the other, a course given in Architecture and Urbanism Graduation in UFMG named "Urban Planning Studio: Occupation and Planning Problems related to water basins".
