Resumen
The polyhexamethylene biguanide, better known as PHMB, an antimicrobial substance is highly suitable for use in acute and chronic wounds critically colonized or infected. The study aimed to identify studies about the actions of PHMB to treat injuries, and to provide recommendations with evidence for the use of dressings PHMB, in their treatment, supported by scientific evidence. It is an integrative review and has as theoretical evidence-based practice. The search for studies was done electronically through the Virtual Health Library (VHL), in which was researched the MEDLINE, PubMed, Cochrane and CINAHL. After the search, according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, seven articles were selected for the sample. The completion of the data collection instrument supported the classification of levels of evidence and recommendations of the studies. The dressing biocellulose with PHMB was predominant and indications included acute and chronic injuries with mild to moderate amounts of exudate and also critically colonized chronic wounds, including those with Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin-resistant, resulting in reduction of microbial load and pain reported by the patients. It was concluded that there are recommendations on the use of dressings with PHMB in lesions of different etiologies, despite the limitations related to the methodology in the studies in the sample. Other primary studies are required to assess other variables such as time to healing, amount of exudate, necrotic tissue regression, and comparison with other products that have antimicrobial activity.
