dc.description.abstract | One of the changes in the natural senescence process is the decrease in muscle mass and strength, called sarcopenia, characterized by a slow and progressive process in the elderly, will affect the functionality and quality of life, increasing morbidity, dependence, recurrent hospitalizations, risks of falls and fractures. The aim of this study was to verify the results of exercise programs to gain muscle strength in the prevention and treatment of falls, through a narrative review. Methods: We selected priority systematic reviews, clinical trials and longitudinal studies published in the last fifteen years, in portuguese and english, which addressed the issue of physical exercise for the prevention and treatment of falls in older adults who had low muscle mass. Results: A total of five articles that met the criteria of this study. Four of these programs to prevent falls through the muscular strength gains observed an improvement in the balance and a reduction in the number of falls, only one study has shown that there was no reduction in the number of falls among its participants, although there was improvement in the balance. Conclusion: Muscle strengthening programs appear to be effective for improving balance in elderly and reducing the occurrence of falls. | |
