The article proposes a reading of the comicalness in the work of Ariano Suassuna, constructed particularly from the representation of the miserable ones of the Brazilian Northeast "sertão". Less distant than the critical tradition supposes, the comicalness approaches the tragic referential that is part of the hard life of the “sertanejo”, the focal point of the Suassuna theater, and it is precisely from an idea of survival that the playwright elaborates his principal comic devices, marking in this way the litmus test of existence. For this, two works will be taken as examples and references for the argument of the text:O auto da compadecida, piece that consecrated the playwright, and Farsa da boa preguiça, written in 1960 and staged in 1961, shortly after the success of the first one.
