Breastfeeding is essential for maternal and child health, and the only food that has all the nutrients necessary for infant development during the first six months of life. Numerous action strategies are being implemented to promote, encourage and support breastfeeding, but we are still far from the recommendations proposed by the World Health Organization To meet these challenges is necessary to know the main causes of early weaning in Brazil. This study aims to investigate the variables described in the literature about the main causes of early weaning and arouse the interest of professionals in health sciences to develop strategies to help avoid this practice. We conclude that despite the vast knowledge about the causes of early weaning, has not managed to strengthen the performance of individuals and groups, where subjects learn not only content, but values and sensibilities of breastfeeding, allowing personal transformation, promoting citizenship and involvement in formulating social policy.
