This research is about the phenomenon of mobility in students of the third grade of Middle School (Ensino Fundamental), who displayed a low performance (BDs) in the census evaluations of PROALFA (MG), for the years of 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010. The phenomenon of mobility of BD students was considered for cases when the student who, in a year, had a BD result and, in following editions of evaluations, had a result of intermediate or recommendable performance, thus assuming that such a student moved upwards, in the PROALFA (MG) performance scale. Or, conversely, when the student was evaluated in a year with intermediate or recommendable performance and, in the following year, with low performance; thus suggesting a downward movement in his educational performance. In order to grasp such mobility phenomenon, a mixed research methodology, both quantitative and qualitative, was used. This option made possible to adjust the gaze of the research and to adopt different scales of observation with a view to better understand the researched object, in its micro- and macro-analytical perspective, leading to case studies of two state schools of the Superintendência Regional de Ensino A, in the Belo Horizonte metropolitan area. The research pointed to the need for discussing the uses of the results and for better exposure and debate of the data generated in the different editions of PROALFA (MG), so that the schools teachers and administrative personnel have greater access to the information and can effectively build pedagogical proposals that produce a positive impact on classrooms practicesand favor the students learning. It is believed that the research herein presented will provide a better understanding of the factors that assist in or make harder the mobility of students identified with low performance.
