School dictionaries are important didactic instruments used for teaching and learninglanguages, both native and foreign. They offer systemized information on the lexicon, its usesand meanings, as well as grammar linguistics and discursive aspects of lexical units. Moreover, they contribute to literacy, the development of reading and writing skills, andlanguages historical studies. Because of globalization, there was a greater evolution ofsciences and techniques in all fields of knowledge, and, due to that, there was an increase inuse of technical terms in language in general. So, the terminologies began to circulate in manycommunicative contexts, and they were, naturally, registered in general language dictionaries.Students began to get in touch with scientific knowledge in subjects like Math, History,Geography and Science, and they needed to understand many terms. Considering theseaspects, the main goal of this work is to show how school dictionary can contribute toteaching of technical and scientific terms, and expand the specialized vocabulary ofstudents/counselors. The motivation for this research is the lack of investigation concerningschool dictionaries, mainly in regard to its extending its use to other school subjects. Themethodology will be based on the selection of technical and scientific terms taken fromcollections of didactic books approved in the PNLD 2014, Vontade de saber matemática,Para viver juntos: história, ensino fundamental; Projeto Araribá: geografia e Projeto Teláris, related to the subjects Math, History, Geography and Science, respectively. Next, we analyzedthe treatment of the terms regarding definitions and entries. To do so, we used the Brasiliandictionaries approved in the PNLD-Dicionários (2012), Aurélio Júnior: dicionário escolar dalíngua portuguesa (2011); Caldas Aulete - minidicionário contemporâneo da línguaportuguesa (2009). Finally, we proposed activities which go beyond the didactic book, usingthe available dictionaries, which will make possible to perform, with junior high students ,activities in the classroom which explore technical and scientific terms from the fields ofMath, History, Geography, and Science.
