dc.description.abstractThis dissertation analyses popular songs as cultural practices, as well as an information and idea support, always minding popular prominence throughout the French Revolution (1789-1794). Starting from the Parisian habit of creating parodies about victory songs, first we traverse chanting places and its authors as a way to comprehend the relation between popular songs and the information network in vigor. After stepping in the revolutionary period, we aim to investigate how popular songs contributed to transformations and, at the same time, were transformed by the Revolution. We argue that during the first revolutionary years these popular songs had a meaning of political activism. During the republican period, we sustain that the State used these popular songs and changed them once again. To do this, we used lyrics and musical notations of popular songs, as well as pictures that were disseminated during the period. Finally, this dissertation also investigates the limits imposed by representative democracy to popular movements political participation.
