Lightning is one of the most important sources of disturbances in distribution systems that can cause permanent or momentary interruptions. The growing concern regarding power quality has created great interest in the interaction of lightning with power systems and an improved protection against its effects on distribution lines. Studiesindicate that, in Brazil, lightning is responsible for more than 30 % of all accidental interruptions in distributions systems. The IEEE Std 1410 proposes a method for assessing the performance of overhead distribution lines and means of reducing the outages. The objective of this work is to study and implement the proposed methodology in a computer program. The program allows to investigate the relationship between lightning activity, the line characteristics (shielding, insulationlevel, type of structures, etc.) and the interruptions caused by direct and indirect lightning, separately. The implemented computer program has great versatility and allows the verifications of how new models may affect the performance estimate of distribution systems.
