Resumen
Facial trauma can be considered one of the more serious aggression found in medical centers because of the emotional consequences and the possibility of deformity. In maxillofacial surgery, the use of autogenous bone is still the first choice for reconstruction of bone defects or irregularities. When there is no possibility of obtaining donor bone, alloplastic materials such as polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) may be used. The prosthesis of PMMA can be prefabricated, bringing advantages such as reduced surgical time, easy handling technical and esthetic results. Moreover, PMMA can also be used to correct soft tissue defects. thus, studies indicate that PMMA as a viable alternative to bone substitute and its applicability in Maxillofacial Surgery.
