Resumen
Benzodiazepines ( BZDs ) are psychoactive drugs classically used to treat anxiety and sleep disorders. Became available from the 1960s and, since then, are among the most prescribed in the world. It is estimated that 50 million people make continuous use. in Brazil is the third most commonly prescribed class of drugs, being used by approximately 4 % of the population. It is estimated that consumption doubles every five years. These data confirm the increasing consumption of benzodiazepines as a result of a lower tolerance to stress, profuse introduction of new drugs and pressure from the pharmaceutical industry or even the habits of improper prescription. Self-medication and the abuse of benzodiazepines by users is one aspect that permeates this scenario, commonly being replaced, as indicated to family, friends or neighbors. Other patients report the casual use of medication or just the " symptomatic " periods. These actions demonstrate a lack of knowledge about the action of benzodiazepines, their side effects and the importance of a correct diagnosis and recommend to keep using. This work aimed to propose an action plan to redirect assistance in mental health in the catchment area community of the White Team from Basic Health Unit Pedro Guerra. A literature review with the purpose of searching the existing evidence on the approaches to cope with abuse of benzodiazepines was performed. Given the current need to reduce / contain the use of benzodiazepines, the management of patients in self-help groups is presented as a promising strategy. Self-help groups provide health promotion and empowerment of self-care among the community with mental distress, which may reflect a reduction in the demand for medical appointments related to psychosomatic complaints and the medicalization of these patients, in addition to increasing the success of the treatment and stabilization of thereof. It is expected that this proposal will contribute to reducing the abuse of benzodiazepines acting on the White Team's community from Basic Health Unit Pedro Guerra.
