This dissertation investigates the role of the production of space in the construction, maintenance, and cracking of the racist and social exclusion system in Brazil. This work aims to identify and illuminate the contradictory potential of the space to be used as a strong fuel for racist practices, and, simultaneously, as a combat gear and resistance to these practices. To achieve this goal, the text is organized into three sections of analysis that have different strategies for reading and understanding the relationship between the production of space and racist practices in the country. First, we study the epistemology behind the production of space and its dimensions (spatial practice, representation of space, and representational space), based on Henri Lefebvre (2006). In this perspective, space is understood as a product and condition of production of different social systems, which includes, in the case of Brazil: The Capitalist System and its intersectional social inequality (composed of a triad of oppressions: racism, sexism, and inequality of classes); and the social struggles that this context of social separation promotes. In sequence, this dissertation presents proof of this dichotomous relationship with a detailed timeline (from the 16th century to the present day) about the parallel stories of racism and the Black Movement in Brazil with a focus on space. Thus, these stories were correlated and space became the object of study for both, which made it possible to understand the process of these social constructions and the role of the production of space in each one. Therefore, analysis, facts, theories, and spatialities have become in-depth discussions based on countless important authors and historians of the history of racism in Brazil. These studies also provided assistance in the process of understanding space as a primary instrument in the construction of racist practices and, concurrently, as the main weakening mechanism. Ultimately, these two parts of analysis were connected - urban and sociological epistemology with historical linearity and its underground social aspects - which demonstrated that changing the agent that manipulates the production of space and its use strategies (institutional, symbolic and individual) essentially changes the direction of social construction. Therefore, it presents an analytical construction of what these spatial mechanisms would be and their forms of use according to racist logic or not. In this sense, the production of space proves to be a protagonist in the construction and reproduction of the most different social relations. In the case of racist practices and, conversely, in the case of democratic relations in Brazil, this work demonstrates and identifies how space is constantly being used as a tool for its construction, maintenance and renovation. Each of these empirical processes represents an important reflection of the role of space agents, such as urban planners and architects. It is necessary to think about their due past responsibilities and the recognition of their unquestionable roles in the future production of spatialities that avoid feeding racial segregation, and, consolidate full democracy in Brazil, which is still limited by structural racism.
