Candidiasis has a particular importance in clinical infections of the oral, vaginal mucous membrane and can also cause severe systemic infections. Influenced by increasing resistance to currently available drugs, by predisposing factors that require better guidance by health care professionals, the vulvovaginal candidiasis is considered a universal problem that affects a great number of women throughout the world. The fungus presents itself not only as a passive participant in the process, but in the course of the infection develops virulence factors interrelate with the host responses. Considering the need for a better match of therapeutic measures and characterization of each case, this paper aimed to contribute to the updating of the management of vulvovaginal candidiasis through literature review, discussing the interaction between the host and the virulence factors of causal agents.
