dc.description.abstractThis work introduces the concept of the Thyristor Switched Series Reactor, TSSR, for the optimization of the electrical power conversion into the thermal power of alternate current electric arc furnace. The TSSR feasibility is demonstrated by the analysis and simulation of the arc furnace operation with and without the series reactor and by an in detail analysis of the critical points for building a static switch with medium voltage thyristors making use of commercially available components. The cost survey for building the series reactor static switch is used as a basis for estimating the return on the investment on the TSSR implementation and for comparison with the alternative solution of switching the series reactor with conventional medium voltage circuit breakers.
