Introduction: The ventilatory support is a critical life support in patients with sepsis and respiratory diseases. Delays in the process of weaning these patients on mechanical ventilation and increased mortality costs the intensive care units. Objective: To evaluate through a literature review the effects of the methods of weaning Tube T versus PSV versus CPAP in patients with sepsis and respiratory diseases. Methods: We performed a literature search in the databases PubMed, SciELO, Lilacs and Peter from 1997 until September 2012. Results: Four articles that evaluated the weaning process by methods chosen that met the inclusion criteria were included in the review. Conclusion: Most of the studies consulted showed that PSV method is more effective in the process of weaning from mechanical ventilation. But it is necessary to further studies on the topic.
