dc.description.abstract | By comparing four translations of the novel fragment The Novices of Saïs [Die Lehrlinge zu Saïs], by Friedrich Leopold von Hardenberg, known under the pseudonym Novalis, published posthumously in 1802 in the context of the so-called Frühromantik (First German Romanticism) that emerged in city of Jena, and through the presentation of a retranslation, the present study aims to combine contributions from translation theories and knowledge of the context of the creation of this work. A reflection is developed on how the concept of retranslation is situated on the versions of Dora Ferreira da Silva (1963), Luís Bruhein (1989), Violeta Cané (1948) and Maurice Maeterlinck (1895) and the validity of the called “retranslation hypothesis” [hypothèse de la retraduction], by Antoine Berman (1990). Temporally distant, the translations communicate directly or indirectly with each other or through intermediate versions. The translation (and the re- translation) of a literary text always stems from the translator's desire and urgency to make (more) visible to readers texts that were previously unknown (or perhaps misunderstood due to weaknesses of previous translations) that were then made accessible in the mother tongue, become part of canons – including those of retranslations. Through the theoretical discussion and proposed retranslation of Lehrlinge by the Saxon poet Novalis, I seek to provide retranslation to offer a possibility of reading as a way of leading to the important texts understanding of literary movement in the late 18th century that taking the name the literary Schools of 19th century, giving principally characteristic to Symbolism. The importance of Athenaeum literary magazine has had an effect as far as contemporary literary studies, the languistic debate and translation studies. The sense of Early German Romanticism even if dissolved in contemporary Literature. The translation is under the threshold between the Self and the Other, between the near and the far of the Bermanian conception, offering a point of average between the translations of Dora Ferreira da Silva and Luís Bruhein. | |
