dc.description.abstract | Several reviews have been published about the effects of systemic or local application of medications on orthodontic tooth movement. The interpretation of the results is complicated by the large variation between the animals used, teeth moved, intensity and distribution of forces and how to medications and their dosages. The administration of eicosanoids resulted in increased orthodontic movement, while its blockade led to a decrease. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) decreased tooth movement, but paracetamol (acetaminophen) had no effect on the tooth movement. Corticosteroids, parathyroid hormone and vitamin D3 stimulates tooth movement, whereas bisphosphonates showed a strong inhibitory effect. Already calcitonin, although involved in bone remodeling and calcium homeostasis, showed no effects on orthodontic tooth movement. Medications can have an important influence on the rate of tooth movement, and information about their consumption is essential to perform planning and treatment. More studies are needed to elucidate which the frequency and dosage of medications that will influence the orthodontic movement. | |
