Cardiovascular diseases affect millions of individuals around the world and are currently considered the leading cause of death in this population. Among pathologies stands atherosclerosis. Moreover periodontal disease, demonstrates the increasing risk of heart disease. Based on this condition, the purpose of this study was to review different clinical and epidemiological studies, which addressed the interaction between periodontal infection and cardiovascular disease. The directaction of some periodontopathic bacteria in atherosclerotic plaque formation and increased some inflammatory mediators in periodontal disease are considered as risk markers. Thus, it was concluded that prevention and treatment of periodontal disease seems to minimize his role as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.
