This study, whose motivation originated in daily practice in a Family Health Team serving rural municipality of Belo Vale / MG, aims to develop an intervention project that enables the improvement of sleep quality of the users in order to promote the reduction of benzodiazepine prescriptions in the sleeplessness approach in order to incorporate new habits and lifestyle. A literature review on the misuse of benzodiazepines for users of primary care was performed, specifically in the insomnia approach, its causes and consequences, as well as on prevention of sleep disorders, in order to minimize the searches of users by that class of drugs. The selected material had as criteria the relevance with the theme and the date of publication, which included the period 2004 to 2012. The work covers the following aspects: the concept of insomnia; benzodiazepines: indications, side effects and misuse; as well as non-pharmacological treatment of insomnia, emphasizing the Sleep Hygiene. In addition, reflected on the different facets of the core problem: the indiscriminate use of benzodiazepines in insomnia approach, since the user host sleepless to the dispensation of drugs by the pharmacy attached to the public network in the city. The study results point to the need for a more relevant indication by physicians and clear guidance to their patients about the proper way to use such drugs; a tighter control of pharmaceutical services in the dispensation of these drugs; a guidance to the public in order to instruct her about practices that promote quality of sleep, enabling it, among other factors, the achievement of Sleep Hygiene. Therefore, we designed an intervention project with the strategies to try to minimize the indiscriminate use of benzodiazepines in the community where I work.
