After extensive bibliographic search, checked through in vitro and in vivo, it proves the popularity of propolis throughout the ages. After thorough analysis of its components, about 300 substances, the most important are the flavonoids, phenolic acids and their esters, possessing antiviral properties, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, among others. It acts synergistically with antimicrobial drugs, without adverse reactions of relevance and can be used as an adjuvant in vaccines. Even with the few reports of the use of alcoholic extracts of propolis on otorhinolaryngologic and respiratory diseases in children, its great usefulness as complementary and preventive treatment, requiring better therapeutic clinical trials.
