This academic work seeks to deal with the unilateral coercive measures in Contemporary International Law. Commonly referred to as sanctions by the political bodies that enact them, by the media and academia, these measures can be defined as those which are unilaterally applied by States, groups of States or International Organizations without the consent of the ones receiving its effects. These target States, and their populations, suffer the severe effects of the restrictions of the economic relations in an international environment of global value chains of increasing complexity and interconnectivity. The consequences to such practices are in general comprehensive violations of the most basic human rights as the right to food and the right to health. This academic work intends to bring attention to this matter, to demonstrate the legal fundaments around it and to reflect on a legal interpretation observant of the commandment of the norm most favorable to human rights.
