The present research investigated the management of wood residues from the furniture industries, more specifically from the upholstery segment, in order to identify solutions aimed at the minimization of these residues. Interdisciplinarity has become indispensable as the interaction between engineering, management and design are essential to study ways of reducing wood waste in the upholstery industry. The company, object of study, is located in the interior of Minas Gerais, in the Zona da Mata region and uses eucalyptus as its main raw material. The research was delineated from the following starting question: what are the possible management actions for the reduction of wood residue in the upholstery industry? The choice of the theme was mainly due to the lack of knowledge about the environmental management and the correct disposal of wood waste by the company and the easy access to it. The methodology used includes the case study, in which the data were collected at the first moment by means of direct observation, semi-structured interview and questionnaire, the quantitative of the generated wood residues was presented, as well as the calculation of waste of the raw material, and it was found that there was a financial loss with the surplus of wood of R $ 73,940.00 in 2017. Subsequently, sustainable alternatives were identified to minimize the wood residues and improve their management. Finally, it was noticed that it is possible to reduce, manage and correctly destine these wastes and it was verified that these actions are beneficial for the furniture industries, however, there are several challenges to be overcome by them, especially those of smaller size.
